Meet Yr Idols is a new project about meeting our heroes. More specifically, the project seeks to collect true stories of interactions with people we respect and admire within a subcultural, "alternative," or politically radical context. In short, these are stories about shaking hands with counter-heroes. From DIY musicians to prolific authors or poets, unsung community activists and rebel artists--these are people we have put on a pedestal because of the impact their work has had on our lives, outside the restrictive confines of dominant culture. The contradictions of this dynamic will be explored through the retelling of these encounters. Contributors are encouraged to describe why these indivduals are important to them, leading up to meeting them in person. Given this significance, what was it like to introduce yourself to them and say hello? How did this make you feel before, during, and after it all happened? Tell us your story about meeting yr idol.
Submissions should be under 3,000 words (illustrations are also welcome) and are due by August 1, 2011. They will be included in a zine or book to be published by early 2012. E-mail your story to: meetyridols@gmail.com
